Big Lap 4×4 Preparation Checklist

A lap of Australia is mostly about planning. Most breakdowns and near-misses come from an overloaded vehicle, missing recovery gear or a fridge that ran out of power. Use this list to work through the big decisions before you leave.

1. Know your payload

Check your compliance plate, then add up everything: canopy, drawers, water, fuel, fridge, passengers and gear. If the total is over, cut weight before you add accessories.

2. Choose a storage setup

A touring canopy is the most common answer for a ute. It keeps dust out and gear dry. Fit it before you pack, not after.

3. Carry the right recovery gear

At a minimum, take rated recovery points, a snatch strap, shackles, boards, a shovel and a tyre repair kit. Browse recovery gear and electric winches.

4. Plan lighting and power

Long days mean more driving at dawn and dusk. Add up your fridge and charging loads, then choose lighting and electronics to match.

5. Protect and support the vehicle

Underbody protection and suspension matched to your loaded weight matter more on a long lap than on a weekend trip. See bash plates and cladding.

6. Service before you go

Have your vehicle serviced by a qualified mechanic, and carry basic spares such as belts, filters and fluids.
