VEHICLE GUIDE
Toyota Hilux Touring Accessories
The Hilux is Australia’s most familiar touring ute, and it has the widest range of aftermarket accessories to match. That range makes fitment choice more important, not less.
Where to start with your Toyota Hilux
Begin with how you travel. Solo tourers tend to put recovery and lighting first. Families usually put storage and a canopy first. Tell us which sounds like you and we will point you at the right category.
- Confirm your model year, variant and body type (tub or tray).
- Work out your payload before adding heavy accessories.
- Choose protection and suspension to match the loaded weight.
- Check state rules on lighting and vehicle modifications.
Toyota Hilux generations and fitment
Accessories for the Toyota Hilux are matched to the model generation, cab style and body, so the year range matters more than the badge. Here is how we approach it:
- 2005 to 2015 (seventh generation): Older Hiluxes are common, so confirm your build date, cab style and whether the tub is original before ordering a canopy or rack.
- 2015 onwards (eighth generation): This run includes the 2020 update with a revised front end, so bars and lighting choices can differ by year. Tell us your variant, such as SR, SR5, Rogue or Rugged X.
Choosing a canopy and racks for your Hilux
The Hilux is the ute most owners already know how to load, which makes it easy to overbuild. Start with how you use the tub. If you carry tools and camping gear, a canopy with side access and a roof rack gives the most usable space. If you tow or carry bulky loads, keep the tub open with roller shutters or a tonneau and mount gear on racks instead. See our aluminium canopies, roof racks and roller shutters, or read our guide to choosing a touring canopy.
Payload and weight on your Hilux
A Hilux that has gained a canopy, drawers, water, a fridge and recovery gear can reach its payload limit quickly. Check the payload on your compliance plate, weigh your loaded setup, and plan suspension and tyres around the real weight rather than the empty ute. Our Big Lap preparation checklist covers weight, power, recovery and spares in more detail.
